On the making

The oak is charred in the Shou Sugi Ban tradition, then laid in staggered courses like brickwork so the surface reads as texture before it reads as wood. The char is not a finish applied to the piece — it is the piece.

At its centre, a bar of selenite is lit from behind, so the light appears to live inside the dark rather than sit upon it. The brass base and pulls are the only elements that reflect; everything else absorbs.
